Following the Kings: Daily Dose of Hope Turns to 1 & 2 Kings on June 1
There's a particular kind of honesty in the books of Kings.
They don't clean up the history. They tell you which kings walked with the Lord and which ones didn't — and they're specific about it. You see what faithful leadership looked like and what it cost. You see what unfaithful leadership looked like and what that cost even more.
Starting Monday, June 1, Daily Dose of Hope is heading into 1 & 2 Kings.
Where It Picks Up
These books start where 2 Samuel ends. David's reign is winding down. Solomon rises to the throne, builds the temple, and speaks wisdom that still holds — and then makes choices that split the kingdom in two.
From there, you're tracking Israel and Judah through generations of kings, each one measured by the same question: did he walk in the ways of the Lord?
Most didn't. Some did, for a while. A few stayed remarkably faithful against odds that would've broken most people.
The Prophets Who Keep Showing Up
What makes this section worth reading slowly isn't just the political history — it's the prophets who keep appearing right in the middle of it.
Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, then bottoms out under a tree in the desert. Elisha does signs that echo the exodus. Huldah speaks straight truth to a king who just rediscovered the law and doesn't know what to do with it.
These voices all do the same thing: call people back — back to the covenant, back to what they already knew, back to a God who hadn't gone anywhere even when they had walked a long way off.
A Question Worth Sitting With
What does faithfulness look like when the culture, the leadership, and all the pressure around you push in a different direction?
1 & 2 Kings doesn't answer that with a formula. It answers it with people — specific, flawed, sometimes surprising people who had to choose God over the alternatives in real situations. Sound familiar?
That's the kind of reading that does something to you if you stay with it.
The 1 & 2 Kings section runs June 1–August 4. Each weekday, read the assigned passage and listen to Pastor Vicki's Daily Dose of Hope reflection.
