Returning to God – The Power of Teshuvah
Turning back isn’t failure—it’s the beginning of grace.
Theme: Teshuvah
Verse: “Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate” (Joel 2:13) oai_citation:0‡FTA_3-26-26.docx
When I was young, Saturdays meant college football. I’d sit in front of the TV imagining what it would feel like to play “on the weekend”—which, back then, meant anything beyond high school. Friday nights belonged to local teams under the lights; Saturdays were reserved for the athletes who had climbed to the next level.
Times have changed, but the dreams of young athletes haven’t. Many still hope to play at higher levels, and the road to get there almost always runs through a coach—someone who teaches, sharpens, and stretches you into your potential.
Coaches are invaluable. They see what we can’t. They correct our technique, challenge our habits, and push us to become better than we were yesterday. But even the best coach can only do so much. We still get overconfident, distracted, or complacent. And when that happens, our old habits show up on the field.
Our faith works the same way.
We know God’s commandments. We know His heart. Yet we drift. We forget what we’ve been taught. We take wrong turns. And eventually, the consequences catch up with us, and we realize how far we’ve wandered from the One who knows us best.
Scripture calls this return repentance. In Hebrew, the word is teshuvah—literally, turning back. Turning back to God. Turning away from sin. Turning toward the One who never stopped loving us.
We’re not going to live perfect lives. None of us are Jesus. But we can make a sincere effort to follow Him faithfully. And when we fail—as we inevitably will—we can be confident of this:
God is gracious.
God is compassionate.
God is always ready to welcome us back.
Like a patient coach who never gives up on His players, God stands ready to guide, correct, restore, and strengthen us every time we turn toward Him.
Have a GREAT week—one filled with courage, humility, and the joy of returning to the One who loves you most.
