Place a Call to Jesus
A new day begins with a simple reminder: God is always ready to listen.
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 18:3
This week’s devotional inspiration came from my grandson, Wyatt, during a walk to see Christmas lights in his neighborhood. As we made our way toward what he called “The Crazy Christmas House”—the one with lots of outdoor decorations—he noticed another home and simply said,
“Oh, that house looks nice.”
His words instantly carried me back to my own childhood, when my grandmother (whose birthday happens to be today) used that exact phrase to describe Christmas displays she approved of. I told Wyatt about her, and without missing a beat he said,
“We should call her.”
I explained that since she is now living with Jesus, we can’t just call her. Wyatt then asked the universal three-year-old question: “Why?”
When I told him I didn’t have the phone number, he quickly reminded me of something profound by saying,
“I know how to call Jesus.”
Out of the mouth of a toddler came a truth we all need: prayer is our direct line to God.
Scripture reminds us of this:
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
— Jeremiah 33:3
And Paul encourages us:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
— Philippians 4:6
In a world where there’s an app for everything, nothing replaces the basics—one-on-one communication with our Creator. As we begin this new year, it’s never too late to resolve to spend more time in prayer. Laying our troubles and praises before the Lord is not only healthy; it’s essential. It’s more important than any workout or daily routine we might plan.
Take Wyatt’s advice. Make time each day to “call” God.
He’s always waiting by the phone.
Have a GREAT week!
