Accidents Happen!
Theme: Accidents Happen!
Verse: The righteous cry, and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. – Psalm 34:17
Accidents are part of life—whether on the court or off it. They disrupt plans, create messes, and demand our attention. But just as in sports, how we respond matters most.
Championship teams don’t give up when a star player falls. They rally. They embrace the “next person up” mentality and rise to the challenge. One of the clearest examples comes from the 1970 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks (with Crystal City, MO’s own Bill Bradley) and the Los Angeles Lakers. With the series knotted at two, Knicks center Willis Reed suffered a serious leg injury. With Reed out, 6'6" Dave DeBusschere was tasked with guarding the towering 7’1” Wilt Chamberlain. It looked like defeat—but instead, the Knicks banded together, won the pivotal game, and were crowned champions a few days later after winning Game 7.
Life brings accidents of its own—sports injuries, missed opportunities, broken relationships. And in those moments, our reactions reveal where our trust lies. Do we lash out in frustration or pause to ask, “God, what are You showing me through this?”
When we fix our eyes on Him, we gain perspective. What seemed like a setback may be preparation for something greater. Romans 8:28–29 reminds us: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose..."
This passage in Romans assures us that every twist, turn, and tumble plays a role in God’s design to shape us into the likeness of His Son. Other assurances come from:
Isaiah 41:10 "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God..." This is a powerful reminder that God’s presence sustains us when circumstances try to overwhelm us.
James 1:2–4 "Consider it pure joy...whenever you face trials of many kinds..." Challenges aren't just obstacles—they're refining tools that build endurance and maturity.
Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This verse anchors us in the reality that divine strength equips us for every mountain we face.
Psalm 46:1–2 "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble..." When chaos looms, He’s our sanctuary, unwavering and near.
Romans 5:3–5 "...suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." A roadmap showing how hardship carves out space for deeper hope and spiritual growth.
Proverbs 3:5–6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding..." Sometimes challenges look like confusion—this verse invites us to trust even when we don’t yet see the outcome.
So, when you face an accident or unexpected detour, keep your chin up. Adopt the “next person up” mindset. Trust the One who hears your cry and promises deliverance. And remember the 1970 Knicks—they didn’t fold. They finished strong.
Have a GREAT week!
