Let the Lion Roar — A New Series in the Book of Amos

There's a moment in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when the children first hear about Aslan — the great lion — and ask whether he's safe. The answer has stuck with readers ever since:

He's not a tame lion, but he is good.

That line is a good way into a new series we're beginning this Sunday, June 7, at New Hope Church.

It's called "Let the Lion Roar," and it walks through the book of Amos. The title comes straight out of the book itself: "The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Sovereign Lord has spoken; who can but prophesy?" (Amos 3:8). Amos is a short, bracing book — a shepherd-turned-prophet speaking plainly to a comfortable people, calling them back to justice, righteousness, and the God who will not be ignored. As Amos famously puts it, "Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream" (Amos 5:24).

That's the picture the title is reaching for. The voice of God is not tame. It confronts complacency, names injustice, and refuses to be background noise. And yet — like Aslan — it is good. It calls people back to truth not to crush them, but to restore them. This is a series about hearing that voice clearly in a noisy world, and trusting that the One who roars is also the One who heals.

What to Expect

"Let the Lion Roar" runs five Sundays:

  • June 7 — "In Pursuit" (Amos 1–2)

  • June 14 — "Return Policy" (Amos 4)

  • June 21 — "Escape Plan" (Amos 5) — Father's Day

  • June 28 — "Ripened Time" (Amos 7)

  • July 5 — "Reclaimed and Renewed" (Amos 9)

Come as you are, bring a friend, and come expecting God to speak. The series begins this Sunday, June 7.
