Our Plans vs. His Plans
Sometimes the path ahead isn't clear—but God sees the destination.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” — Jeremiah 29:11
A few months ago, a running friend shared his 14-year-old son's life plan with me. It was impressively detailed: where he’d go to college, a stint in the Air Force (grateful he chose the right branch!), and even when he’d start a family. At fourteen, he had mapped out his future with remarkable precision.
After hearing it all, I suggested his dad write it down, tuck it away, and revisit it when his son turns 25. Not to critique, but to compare the dream with the reality that unfolds. Because the truth is, none of us really know what God has in store. What we do know is that He walks with us every step of the way.
Planning is good. Dreaming is essential. But we must hold those plans loosely. Life rarely follows a straight line, and sometimes the detours are the very places where purpose is found.
Paul’s story in the Bible is a vivid example. He had a clear life trajectory—one that certainly didn’t include becoming one of Jesus’ greatest disciples. But God intervened. And Paul, to his credit, was open to the change. That openness led him to a calling far greater than anything he could have imagined.
We need that same openness. That same willingness to pivot when God redirects our steps. He knows our hearts. He sees the destination even when the road feels winding or unclear. And He never fails us.
So, dream boldly. Plan with hope. But stay flexible. Be ready to follow a different path if God leads you there.
Here are some of God’s truths to encourage you as you walk the path He sets before you:
Isaiah 43:19 – “See, I am doing a new thing!...” — A powerful reminder that God is always at work, even in unexpected places.
Philippians 3:13–14 – “...Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead...” — Like Paul, we’re called to press forward—even when the path shifts.
Isaiah 58:11 – “The Lord will guide you always...” — Assurance that even in dry seasons, God’s guidance is steady.
Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet...” — Not a floodlight for the whole journey, but just enough light for the next faithful step.
Have a GREAT week—and may your steps be guided by grace.
