Be Curious, Not Judgmental: Lessons from Ted Lasso and Jesus

When we lead with curiosity, we walk paths of grace.

There’s something quietly profound about the leadership lessons tucked inside the humor and heart of Ted Lasso. While the show’s language and romantic subplots may not be for everyone, its core message—especially Ted’s approach to leadership—is undeniably powerful.

One scene stands out to me: Ted finds himself challenged to a game of darts by the former owner of AFC Richmond, a man driven by ego and spite. The wager is set, and the owner smugly reveals custom darts he “just happened” to have on him. Ted, who had casually tossed a few darts with his right hand, pauses and says:

“Oh, I forgot—I’m left-handed.”

He then proceeds to hit a bullseye and dominate the game.

But it’s not just a clever twist. As Ted throws, he shares how people have always underestimated him—judging without taking the time to truly know him. He quotes:

“Be curious, not judgmental.”

While the line is often misattributed to Walt Whitman, its wisdom is timeless.

And it echoes a deeper truth found in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7, Jesus teaches:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” (Matthew 7:1)

This isn’t a call to abandon standards or accountability—it’s a call to pause, reflect, and seek understanding before rushing to judgment.

Imagine the driver who cuts you off—maybe they’re racing to the hospital. Or the person who snaps at you—perhaps they’ve just received devastating news. When we choose curiosity over condemnation, we not only reduce our own stress, but we also become more compassionate, more grounded, and more pleasant to be around.

Leadership isn’t about control—it’s about connection. Ted Lasso reminds us that empathy, humility, and curiosity can transform a culture. Jesus reminds us that grace begins with understanding.

So, this week, let’s lead with curiosity. Let’s ask the next question. Let’s see people not just as they appear, but as they are.

Here are some verses that might help:

  • Matthew 7:1–2
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged...”
    — Jesus’ call to humility and self-awareness in how we treat others.

  • Luke 6:37
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
    — A powerful invitation to lead with mercy.

  • Romans 14:13
“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block...”
    — Encourages us to be mindful of how our judgments affect others.

Have a curious, not judgmental week.
