One Play
You never know which moment will be your “one play.”
"Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season…” — 2 Timothy 4:2
Do you know who David Tyree is? Unless you're a die-hard New York Giants fan or a Super Bowl trivia buff, probably not. But Tyree is remembered for one play in Super Bowl XLII.
In a season where he had only 4 receptions for 35 yards, Tyree nearly doubled that total in one miraculous moment. On a desperate 3rd down, Eli Manning launched a pass that Tyree pinned against his helmet — the now legendary “Helmet Catch.” That play kept the drive alive and led to the touchdown that ended the New England Patriots’ perfect season.
There were bigger names on the roster, but Tyree was the one in the right place at the right time. His readiness turned him into a hero.
Life works the same way. Each of us will face moments where we can make the “big play.” It might be as simple as holding the door for a parent juggling three kids, or as profound as walking alongside someone in deep emotional pain. Whatever it looks like, God is preparing you to be His hands and feet in your community.
Biblical truths that encourage us:
Esther 4:14: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Just like Tyree’s moment, Esther was called to step up at the right time.1 Peter 3:15: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
Preparation matters — be ready when God gives you the chance.
None of us know what play God has for us to run. He just wants us to be ready when He calls us into action.
When that moment comes, don’t you want to be ready — just like David Tyree?
Have a GREAT week.
