Dear Corinth: Food Fight | Rev. Vicki Harrison
Are We Taking the Lord’s Supper Seriously Enough?
We’ve all been to family meals that ended in arguments. But imagine turning a sacred celebration into a spiritual food fight. That’s what was happening in the church at Corinth, and Paul wasn’t having it. In this week’s message from our Dear Corinth series titled "Food Fights," we take a hard look at the meaning of communion, what we proclaim through it, and how division undermines the gospel.

Three Truths the Table Teaches Us
1. You need to be saved—and you can be.
The Lord’s Supper is not just a religious ritual. It's a proclamation of what Jesus did for us: His body broken, His blood poured out. Salvation isn’t about earning our way to God. It’s a gift received by grace. And communion reminds us that through Jesus' sacrifice, we can be saved.
2. Suffering and death are not the end.
This table doesn’t just point to death—it proclaims resurrection. Paul reminds the Corinthians (and us) that Jesus didn’t stay in the grave. He rose and will return. Communion boldly declares: Death is not the end. Poverty is not the end. Jesus is coming again.
3. There’s no room for classism or racism in the body of Christ.
In Corinth, wealthier members were indulging while others went hungry—turning communion into a symbol of division rather than unity. But at this table, we are reminded: All have sinned. All need grace. All are made in God’s image. There’s no place for favoritism, prejudice, or exclusion in the church that follows Jesus.
Faith in Practice: Examine Your Heart
How do you approach communion? As routine… or reverence?
This week, take time to reflect on the cross and how it shapes your relationships, perspectives, and daily actions. Ask: Am I living in a way that honors Christ’s sacrifice? Am I loving others as He loved me?
Then consider joining a Group or serving opportunity to grow in grace with others.
