"Journey of Stones: Upon This Rock” | Rev. Vicki Harrison

Who Do You Say Jesus Is?

If someone asked you today, “Who is Jesus to you—personally?”… how would you answer?

In this week’s message from our Journey of Stones series, Pastor Vicki Harrison challenges us with one of the most important questions Jesus ever asked. This isn’t about what others believe—it’s about what you believe.

Be sure to watch the full service video below or listen through the sermon audio player as you reflect on this life-defining truth.

The Question That Changes Everything

In Matthew 16, Jesus asks His disciples:

“Who do you say I am?”

It’s a question that cuts through assumptions, traditions, and secondhand faith.

We often rely on:

  • What our family believes

  • What culture says

  • What the church teaches

But Jesus makes it personal.

Your faith cannot be borrowed.
Your answer cannot be outsourced.

At some point, every follower of Jesus must answer this question for themselves.

A Bold Confession, Not a Safe Answer

When the disciples hesitate, Peter speaks up:

“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

This wasn’t a safe or easy statement—it was bold, risky, and deeply personal.

To say this meant:

  • Jesus is Savior — the only one who forgives sin

  • Jesus is Lord — the one who leads every part of your life

  • Jesus is God — not just a teacher, but divine

  • Jesus is Creator — over all people, not just those we agree with

Pastor Vicki reminds us that too often, we settle for vague or silent faith.

But Jesus isn’t asking for safe answers—He’s calling for clear, courageous confession.

Your Faith Is a Stone in God’s Church

Jesus responds to Peter:

“On this rock I will build my church…”

The “rock” is not just Peter—it’s his confession of faith.

Every believer who boldly declares Jesus as Lord adds another “stone” to the foundation of the Church.

From Peter…
to the early church…
to generations of faithful disciples…
to you.

Your faith matters.

Your voice matters.

Your witness matters.

It’s Time to Stand and Be Counted

Pastor Vicki gives a clear challenge:

Vague is no longer enough.
Lukewarm is no longer acceptable.

The world needs bold, authentic followers of Jesus.

  • Your family needs it

  • Your coworkers need it

  • Your neighbors need it

  • Your children and grandchildren need it

And the church needs it too.

So the question remains:

Who do you say Jesus is—and are you willing to say it out loud?

Take Your Next Step

What would it look like for you to boldly live out your faith this week?

  • Share your story with someone

  • Speak openly about your faith

  • Surrender an area of your life to Jesus as Lord

  • Join a Group and grow with others

Know Jesus. Grow Faith. Go Multiply.

At New Hope, we believe faith is more than belief—it’s a life of discipleship.

  • Know Jesus — personally and deeply

  • Grow Faith — through community and obedience

  • Go Multiply — by boldly sharing your faith

This is how God builds His Church—one life, one confession, one “stone” at a time.
